Annually, more than half a million students in 6 to12 grade are encouraged to participate in the National History Day contest. In the contest, students receive the important duty to choose historical topics related to the yearly themes and select their presentation style from the following categories: video, website, exhibit, documentary, paper, and performance.

What is NHD?

NHD is a large-scale educational competition among students from different schools that enables students to learn new knowledge and get special experiences such as representing their stuff in a new environment and in front of new teachers.

Where does NHD Locate and when does it happen?

This year NHD will be held in Seoul International School, Feb. 22, 2025. The topic of this year’s NHD is “rights and responsibility.”

What is the goal of NHD?

The goal of NHD is to give valuable experience of academic success and skill development to the students and improvise their topic by developing their skills to manage and use various information from different time periods, including critical thinking, problem solving, argumentation, writing and citation.

What is the award?

All nominees will receive $500, and the national award comes with $10,000 cash prizes. Significantly, the students who win the NHD Korea, receive the opportunity to go to Washington, DC and compete abroad in the international competition.

What are the standards of evaluation?

NHD competition will rate in 5 different criteria. Critical thinking, communication, methods, cooperation, research, project and time management on topics.

The five contest categories

Documentary

Ten-minute film using media (images, video and sound) to show their historical argument, research evidence, and interpretation of their topic’s significance in history.

Exhibit

Three-dimensional physical and visual representation of student’s historical argument, research evidence, and interpretation of their topic’s significance in history

Paper

Written format of essay for presenting about historical argument, research evidence and interpretation of student’s topic significance in history

Performance

Dramatic play that portrays the historical argument, research evidence, and interpretation of a student’s topic significance in history.

Website

Collection of web pages that uses multi-media to communicate student’s historical argument, research evidence, and interpretation of student’s topic significance in history.
