Yoon Suk Yeol, the contemporary president of South Korea, officially announced martial law for the first time in 50 years in the democratic political history of South Korea on December 3, 2024, and canceled it after 6 hours.

Without any possible foresight, Yoon Suk Yeol announced martial law at around 10:25 pm on December 3, 2024. President Yoon Suk Yeol stated that this decision was caused by the will to protect national security and the constant threat of North Korea. Amidst concerns and negative reactions from many South Korean citizens, the martial law was called off after 6 hours, at 4:30 a.m. Professors assumed that this incident was due to rapidly increasing pressure on President Yoon Suk Yeol.

“It was chaotic and confusing due to overloaded attention from the media and people,” said Ashley Lee from 10th grade of Cornerstone Seoul Academy. This incident did brought confusion and dismay to many South Korean citizens. Numerous students and adults were concerned about commuting to school or work the next day. However, due to rapid coping with this incident from the government, all students and workers could go to their schools and work as usual today.
